DENTAL IMPLANTS: Assessment and Maintenance Strategies

Maintenance is essential to the long-term success of dental implants. Patients with dental implants require customized professionals and self-care protocols. Based on current scientific evidence, this course will present assessment strategies and treatment technologies available for establishing a successful implant maintenance program.

- Discuss dental implants as an option for natural tooth replacement
- Differentiate the various types of dental implants and implant system components
- Identify the role of the hygienist in preoperative assessment, post surgical care, and implant maintenance
- Assess implant health via soft tissue, occlusion, mobility, and radiographic analyses
- Compare and contrast probing recommendations and techniques
- Incorporate ultrasonic technology into implant maintenance to enhance outcomes
- Establish a customized recare schedule and home care regimen for implant patients

Pam Quinones, RDH, BS
Ms. Quinones is the 2011–2012 president of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association. She has practiced clinical dental hygiene for more than 30 years and owns the dental hygiene placement service Hygiene Associates, Inc. She is also co-founder of the Washington Metropolitan Dental Hygiene Council.

This course will address the most recent data on aging and discuss the oral ramifications of common diseases and conditions related to the aging process. Customized treatment protocols best suited for those with medical/oral concerns will also be discussed.

- Review the demographics and health status of aging populations
- Identify the top health concerns related to the aging process and their implications for oral health
- Recognize key indicators of wellbeing
- Discuss general oral health concerns common to the aging population
- Review prophylactic antibiotic guidelines for patients with infective endocarditis and joint replacements
